Troika Returns to Athens for New Round of Talks

Alternate Finance Minister George Chouliarakis and his team.

Talks between Greece’s creditors and the government on concluding the third review of the Greek program are due to begin today (Monday), when the heads of the institutions’ missions return to Athens.
This will be the first round of negotiations, which is expected to last until the end of next week.
According to the finance ministry, fiscal issues will be the focus of two successive meetings to be held with Alternate Finance Minister George Chouliarakis on Monday.
Both sides have expressed willingness to wrap up the review by Christmas.
Last week Christine Lagarde and Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos agreed that a timely completion of the third review of the Greek bailout is essential for discussions on debt restructuring to gather pace.
The hard deadline, in any case, is considered to be February 2018, in order to allow time for the successful launch and conclusion of the final review of the bailout program by June 2018.
The bailout expires in August 2018 and the Greek government would like to have also begun talks on debt relief by then.
