Happy Ending for Pensioner’s Nightmare in Mandra, Attica (photos)


The rescue of an elderly Greek woman from her flooded home in Mandra, Attica was captured on camera.
The woman was entrapped by the water and unable to move. She lied on her sofa bed waiting for help.

Fortunately, helped arrived when neighbours called the emergency services. The woman was transferred to a local hospital for treatment.


She was one of the lucky ones. At least nine people died from the floods in the town of Mandra.
The towns of Mandra, Nea Peramos and Megara were hit by heavy storms in the early hours of Wednesday.
Interior Minister Panos Skourletis, Alternate Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas and the chief of the fire Brigade Vassilis Kapelios arrived in the Mandra area and the surrounding flooded districts on Wednesday to help coordinate operations.
Meanwhile, 50 fire engines and 150 firemen from Athens, along with five fire engines from Corinth have also come to reinforce existing emergency services, while three rescue teams are expected to arrive very soon.
Pumps and other machinery are expected from Patras, Lamia and Larissa within the day.
