New Storms Hit Athens and Flooded Areas of Attica


The weather system that claimed at least 15 lives in Attica on Wednesday struck again in Athens on Thursday.
Roads in several parts of the Greek capital have turned to rivers.
Traffic was interrupted in central Athens, on Pireos Street near the junction with Chamosternas Street, due to rising water levels as a result of heavy rainfall in the area.
Traffic was also interrupted at exit 1 of Attiki odos in the direction to Elefsina due to an accumulation of water as a result of heavy rainfall in the area.
Traffic on the National Highway linking Athens and Thessaloniki has also been disrupted.
There have been no reports yet on damage to property.
Heavy rain continues to fall in the towns further west. The main road at Mandra is flooded again today; and emergency services say that at least two people are still missing.
Flash floods have also struck the towns of Ioannina, Metsovo and Zitsa.
Local media has reported rock falls and mud slides on many parts of the road network.
Τhe National Meteorological Services (EMY) has issued an emergency bulletin warning of more extreme weather conditions over the following days.
According to the report, heavy rainfall and storms will continue, while strong winds and hail storms are also in the forecast.
