Mayor of Thessaloniki Calls FYROM "Macedonia" During Skopje Visit

The mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, referred to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) with its constitutional name “Macedonia,” during his visit to Skopje.
Boutaris met with FYROM’s President Georgi Ivanov and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev.
In comments to the assembled journalists following the meeting the Greek mayor was referring to FYROM as Macedonia.
“We are not politicians and we are not making politics, but we are trying to improve relations between cities. Improving transnational relations is easier to do from the bottom up. And by improving relations, solutions can easily be found,” Boutaris said.
It is not the first time that Boutaris used the term Macedonia to refer to FYROM.
Greece has objected to the tiny country’s name and use of symbols relating to the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia, and argues that the use of the name “Macedonia” also implies territorial claims over Greece’s own northern region with the same name.
The dispute has led to Skopje’s isolation from international bodies like NATO and the European Union.
