Thousands Gather in Crete to Honor Dutch Coach Eugene Gerards

Thousands of football fans gathered at Iraklio football ground on Monday to honor 77-year-old Dutchman Eugene Gerards, who coached OFI Crete from 1985 to 2000.
The crowd chanting “Dutchman, we shall never forget you” was a truly moving moment for the former manager, who is in a wheel-chair.

Veteran footballers and a host of Euro 2004 winners played a game in honor of Gerards, who is adored in Crete.
Among the veterans were some of those he managed at OFI over his long reign.
Under Gerards, OFI enjoyed its most successful period of its history, becoming a force to be reckoned with in Greek football.
