Three Antiquity Smugglers Arrested in Chios Island

An inspection carried out at the port of Chios by members of the Special Missions and the Port Authority Security Office, identified two transport pallets carrying 8 jars full of antiquities, just before being loaded onto a passenger ferry boat.

Two of these jars contained a marble column and a metal shell. According to the dispatch note, sender and recipient were the same person, a 42-year old, who was identified after further inspection, and was arrested boarding on the same boat where the pallets would be loaded on.

He was escorted by his 18-year old nephew, who was also arrested as a co-perpetrator. Further checks were carried out on the privately owned commercial farm truck, in which two female marble busts were found.

The two nationals, according to preliminary investigation, had purchased the marble capital and the metal shell from a 49-year old foreigner, who was later identified and arrested.

All the objects were confiscated by the Central Port Authority of Chios which carries out the preliminary investigation. The two suspects will be brought in front of the Chios Prosecutor.

According to reports, the suspected smugglers planned to transport the smuggled objects to the main Greek port of Piraeus.
