OECD: Greece Champion in Tax Increase

Greece showed the largest increase in the ratio of taxation to total economic activity among the 35 member states of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in 2016.
According to new figures released by the OECD, taxes in Greece in 2016 went up to 38.6% of GDP; an increase of 2.2 points compared to the previous year.
This is the second consecutive year that the tax burden for Greeks got heavier, since between 2014 and 2015 there was an increase of 0.5 percentage points in taxes.
Greece ranked 10th overall in terms of direct and indirect taxation compared to GDP, and more than four points above the OECD average.
Denmark ranks first with 45.9%, followed by France with 45.3%. On the other end, Mexico is last, with taxes being 17.2% of GDP.
The largest tax burden – equivalent to 15.8% of GDP – comes from the taxation of goods and services, i.e. taxes linked to trade and household expenditure.
