Champion Nafissatou Thiam deprived Katerina Stefanidi of the female Athlete of the Year title at the annual IAAF awards held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Friday.
Although forecasts were in favor of champion Stefanidi winning the International Association of Athletics Federations award, the 23-year-old Belgian multi-event athlete was the one who received the award in a glamorous event with the participation of the world’s top athletes in athletics.
“It was an excellent year. With the help of my husband we won everything. We looked at each event separately,” Thiam told reporters.
Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim was named male World Athlete of the Year. IAAF also honored Usain Bolt for his contribution to sport.
The title of Rising Star in men was given to Karsten Warholm and the female Rising Star was Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas.
