Vandals Deface Monument Honouring Refugees who Perished in the Aegean

A monument on Lesvos, bearing the names of some of the refugees who lost their lives trying to cross into Greece in 2012-2013, was vandalized by unknown individuals, who threw black paint on it.

A local activist’s movement called “Movement for the Coexistence and Communication in the Aegean,” condemned the incident.

“One wonders what the perpetrator or perpetrators intended by attacking the memory of those people. If anything, they have disregarded universal values and traditions which our ancestors first highlighted, such as respecting the dead, whoever they are,” it said in a statement.
