A Total of 1,650 Migrants and Refugees Depart from Lesvos for the Mainland

Between December 1-17, a total of 1,650 refugees and migrants; all members of vulnerable groups, departed from the island of Lesvos and have gone to refugee/asylum seeker facilities in Athens, and other areas of mainland Greece.
According to Migration Ministry figures, the number of migrants and refugees remaining at the Moria hotspot on Lesvos has fallen below 6,000 for the first time in several months.
On Monday, the number of people in the Moria camp fell to 5,500, while another 990 refugees were recorded at the municipality’s refugee camp at Kara Tepe, and approximately 700 migrants and refugees were staying in other accommodation in the town of Mytilene.
Meanwhile, since December 1, there were 659 new arrivals on Lesvos, 550 on Chios and 560 on Samos.
During the same period, the Turkish coast guard intercepted 17 boatloads of migrants and refugees attempting to reach the Greek islands, and sent 775 individuals back to Turkey.
