Gunshots were reportedly heard in downtown Athens on Friday as two prisoners tried to escape police custody during a transfer.

Media reports say the two men — both Georgian nationals arrested in Greece on burglary charges earlier this month — were being transferred to a psychiatric hospital from prisons in Athens and Nafplio when they tried to escape in the Metaxourgio area of the capital.

One was immediately intercepted but police were forced to chase the second suspect.

Despite shots being fired, no injuries have yet been reported.
