Lefteris Petrounias and the Greek gymnastics team were the success story of the European Union of Gymnastics awards on Monday, sweeping three of the top five prizes.
Twenty-seven-year-old Petrounias — nicknamed the ‘Lord of the Rings’ — received the Male Gymnast of the Year award with 5,277 votes and also bagged the Outstanding Performance of the Year award with 7,798 votes.
He previously won gold in the 2016 Rio Olympic games, and claimed back-to-back world championship titles in 2017 and 2015. He remains a four-time European medalist on the still rings.
Greece’s Thrakomakedones Olympics squad were named team of the year.
