Travel to and from Greece appears to be on the rise as Greek media reports air passenger numbers at the country’s airports set a new record last year, reaching 58 million.
According to Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data reported by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency this week, this total represents a 9.5 percent increase on 2016.
The CAA said just over 482,400 flights were recorded in 2017. Over 192,200 were international and almost 290,200 were domestic.
It was Heraklion airport in Crete which saw the highest increase in 2017 passenger numbers, recording a 10.8 percent leap to 7.5 million passengers.
Passenger numbers by sea have also been on the increase. The number of domestic and international passengers embarking and disembarking at Greek ports was up 8.1 percent in the 2016/2017 period, according to provisional data released by ELSTAT — the Hellenic Statistical Authority – on Dec. 15 last year.
