A mysterious fishy visitor to Greek waters has left locals in the Ionian island of Zakynthos in a panic.
Two fishermen recently shared footage of a chance encounter with an enormous ocean sunfish, an animal usually unknown in Greek waters as it normally lives in tropical or temperate zones.
The world’s heaviest bony fish, adults can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) long and weigh a maximum of 1,000 kilograms (2,205 lbs.) — more than a small car.
Although they are eaten as a delicacy in the Far East, the EU has forbidden their consumption in Europe as their internal organs are thought to contain a range of toxins.
It is thought the fish found in Greece was ‘sunbathing’ — warming up its body after freezing deep-sea hunts.
