These Are the New Names Suggested for FYROM and They All Include Macedonia

A website in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) is reporting a list of proposed new names for the state — all of which include the word ‘Macedonia’.
The MKD.mk site on Thursday listed the proposals, apparently from UN mediator Matthew Nimetz, as:
Republika Nova Makedonia (Republic of Macedonia)
Republika Severna Makedonija (Republic of Macedonia)
Republika Gorna Makedonija (Republic of Macedonia)
Republika Vardarska Makedonija
Republika Makedonija (Skopje) (Republika Makedonija [Skopje])
Their abbreviated forms are:
Nova Makedonija (Nova Macedonia)
Severna Makedonija (Northern Macedonia)
Gorna Makedonija (Upper Macedonia)
Vardarska Makedonija (Macedonia Vardari)
Makedonija (Skopje)
Although the proposed names are not new initiatives, and come early in a UN-backed talks process between Greek and FYROM negotiators in the U.S., it is likely to unsettle public opinion in Greece.
Almost seven out of ten Greeks oppose the use of term ‘Macedonia‘ by the former Yugoslav republic according to a recent poll.
The survey by pollsters Marc published in Greek paper Proto Thema on Sunday revealed that 68 percent of respondents say Greece should not agree to a compound name which includes the term Macedonia; only 23.6 percent opted for a compromise.
Local media also report tensions in the governing coalition between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ SYRIZA party and junior partners, the Independent Greeks.
Kathimerini reported on Thursday Independent Greeks’ lawmaker Dimitris Kammenos saying his party will not back any compromise which used the term ‘Macedonia’
Talks
No breakthroughs were achieved on Wednesday’s first meeting between Nimetz, the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, and representatives of Greece and FYROM in New York the U.S. diplomat said.
Nimetz is holding a new round of talks at the UN headquarters until Friday in an attempt to break the impasse of almost three decades.
