“It is time for decisions and I believe we are there,” was the view of UN mediator Matthew Nimetz speaking after a meeting on the ‘Macedonia’ issue with senior officials in Athens on Tuesday.
Nimetz is visiting Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) this week in an attempt to push forward talks aimed at ending the nearly-three-decade name dispute.
Describing the Greek government as “sincere and energetic” in trying to find a solution, Nimetz also played down leaked alternative names for FYROM, all of which had included the name ‘Macedonia’.
“Both governments may have their own ideas and they can use, I hope, some of my own. I never give final ideas; I am a mediator, I am not a judge. I have given my best ideas that exist at the moment,” he said.
Earlier, Greek foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias confirmed Athens had prepared a draft deal which will be presented to the government in Skopje in February.
Nimetz’s talks in Athens and Skopje come just days before a major rally in the Greek capital against any use of the term ‘Macedonia’ in a compromise on the name dispute.
