Dozens of protesting farmers have driven their tractors into the center of the town of Lamia in central Greece, angry over austerity policies they claim threaten their livelihood.

The farmers blockaded the town centre and held a meeting where they discussed their next moves.

They decided to block the main highway linking Athens and Thessaloniki for an hour in an act which could prove to be the start of a series of nationwide actions.

Late January is traditionally a period when Greek farmers take their tractors to the streets demanding an increase in pensions, a cut in insurance contributions and better prices for their agricultural products.
