Daniel Day-Lewis Tells Athens About Retirement (video)

“I just feel it’s time to explore the world in a different way now,” Daniel Day-Lewis has told an Athens audience about his recent decision to retire from acting.
The award-winning thespian made the statement in the Greek capital on Thursday, where he attended the premiere of what may be the last film of his career, Paul Thomas Anderson’s historical drama “Phantom Thread”.
Hailed as the World’s Greatest Actor by “Time” in 2012 and the only actor in history to have won three Academy Awards for best male lead, Day-Lewis said he was “thankful” for his acting career and everything it had given him.
When asked what prompted his decision to retire, he said he was unable to answer the question as he did not entirely know himself.
“I don’t fully understand it but it came to me with a sense of conviction so I choose to move forward in acceptance of that rather than struggling with it,” he said.
The premiere of “Phantom Thread” – which earned the actor another nomination for Best Actor – was held at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) on Thursday, with the proceeds donated to a charity for the protection of individuals with cerebral palsy.
