Authorities Shut Athens' ‘Nursing Home from Hell’

Greek authorities have shut down a nursing home in the Agia Paraskevi suburb of northern Athens due to unacceptable living conditions.
Fourteen elderly people were moved to other facilities after the Ministry of Heath, the prefecture of Attica and healthcare organizations won a prolonged legal battle to close the home.
Third Age was dubbed the “nursing home from hell” as its residents had to endure months without heating and adequate food.

The authorities had imposed fines accumulating to €150,000 ($186,000) for inadequate cleaning and hygiene care.
“We have put an end to the tragedy of 14 people, ” Giorgos Karameros, deputy regional governor, wrote on Twitter.
“The owner systematically exploited the inability or indifference of the residents’ relatives,” he added.
