Academy of Athens Tells Skopje to End Taking of Greek Culture

Greece’s highest research institute — the Academy of Athens — has said Skopje needs to revise its claims to “the history, culture and symbols of our country”.
In an announcement on Friday it said: “The Academy of Athens has closely monitored this nationally important issue and has repeatedly stated its position publicly, based on indisputable historical, cultural and archaeological facts.
“It notes that a necessary condition of any agreement on the name of the state of Skopje should include a revision of its constitution, relinquishing irredentist claims (maps, school books, statues of Alexander the Great etc.) and the appropriation of the history, culture and symbols of our country.
“The place that a people have settled does not, in itself, define their identity. The extended failure to settle this issue is not in the interests of the two countries.”
