High-level talks between Greece and Cyprus took place on Tuesday as Turkey renewed its claim to a section of Cypriot waters for military exercises, stymieing energy exploration in the island’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades spoke on the phone ahead of an expected emergency meeting of Cypriot ministers later on Tuesday.
A Navtex maritime communication from Turkey has claimed part of the EEZ’s Block 3 area for military exercises, effectively preventing energy ships from exploring or drilling for gas or oil.
A prior notice was cited as the reason for Turkish warships blocking the work of ENI-charted drill ship, Saipem 12000.
Greek media report that Cyprus is to file a notice with the UN over the Turkish move.
