Thessaloniki Unveils Holocaust Memorial Events

Greece’s second city, Thessaloniki, will pay tribute to the victims of the WWII Holocaust with a series of events starting next week.
The northern city, which once had a pre-war Jewish population of 54,000, will host films, concerts and exhibitions over four days commencing next Wednesday.
Sunday, March 18, will also see a silent memorial march from Eleftherias Square to the city’s railway station.
Thessaloniki is to be the site of a Holocaust Memorial Museum, and there are plans to complete a municipal park with thousands of olive trees, one for each of the city’s residents deported and killed by Nazi forces.
The city has also seen anti-Semitism raise its head this year, when a monument which commemorates the Holocaust was defaced with far-right graffiti.
