Greece is World's 79th Happiest Country

Are Greeks getting happier?

A new UN-backed report into world happiness has placed Greece 79th out of 156 nations.
The World Happiness Report for 2018 claims to be a “landmark survey of the state of global happiness” which ranks countries “by their happiness levels, and 117 countries by the happiness of their immigrants”.
Greece was behind regional neighbors such as Serbia (78) and Turkey (74). Finland was ranked as the happiest country in the world, both among its immigrant and general populations.
Among the four European countries most affected by the financial crisis, Greece saw an increase in average life expectancy from 69.5 years in 2000, to 71.9 years in 2015.
However, the report also claims many immigrant groups around the world have not become happier, including the Albanian minority in Greece.
The report’s happiness ranking among countries’ foreign-born between 2005 and 2017 put Greece at 61st among 117 countries.
Its authors claim: “The countries with the happiest immigrants are not the richest countries, but instead the countries with a more balanced set of social and institutional supports for better lives.”
