An “unpredictable” Turkey is losing political capital having “burned its bridges” with erstwhile allies, a Greek minister said on Monday.
Alternate Foreign Minister for European Affairs George Katrougalos was speaking in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency’s radio station, Praktoreio 104.9 FM.
Katrougalos said Greece, on the other hand, had emerged as a calm force in the last three years, making use of its international alliances, enhancing its international prestige and especially its presence in the EU.
Referring to Turkey’s military operations in Syria, he pointed out that the Greek government is on heightened alert with respect to Ankara.
“Turkey is opening up many fronts; it is unpredictable, and it often seems willing to disrupt formerly close ties with countries such as Germany [and] America, while it is clearly keeping tensions high in the Aegean,” he said.
At the same time, Turkey has lost diplomatic capital and was unable to negotiate from a position of strength, having “burned all its bridges,” Katrougalos added.
Tensions between Greece and Turkey have gotten worse in recent months.
On Friday, 15 Greek MEPs called on the Turkish government to swiftly release two Greek soldiers held in Edirne after the pair accidentally crossed into the country’s territory during a border patrol over two weeks ago.
