Turkish Man Sentenced for Drunkenly Crossing Greek Border

A Greek court has handed down a suspended sentence to a Turkish man who ran across the Greek-Turkish border.
According to police, the 40-year-old was intoxicated when he ran into Greece at the northeastern Kastanies border crossing just before midnight on March 19.
The incident happened in an area where earlier in the month two Greek soldiers inadvertently crossed into Turkey, were arrested and are still being held in a prison in Edirne.
The man told the court he had been drinking earlier, and that he would like to travel to Sweden, where his children live.
Local residents said Turkish soldiers apparently fired in the air while pursuing him.
According to some reports, he was among a larger group of Turks attempting to flee the country. Three others were arrested on the Turkish side of the border.
A local misdemeanor court gave the man a four-month prison sentence, suspended for three years. He was placed in custody pending deportation to Turkey.
