Golden Dawn MP Yiannis Lagos on Thursday verbally attacked members of the cabinet in parliament calling them “traitors” and almost came to blows with a SYRIZA lawmaker.
Lagos invoked the letter the Pan-Macedonian associations sent to all Greek Parliament Members, warning them that they will be tried for treason and sentenced to life imprisonment if they vote for the word “Macedonia” to be used in the FYROM name.
The Golden Dawn lawmaker said that the House Speaker Nikos Voutsis “cried” when the letter arrived. On the contrary, he said, the members of his party can walk the streets of Athens without fear and speak to citizens, “unlike SYRIZA members.”
“God willing, you will all go to prison,” Lagos said addressing the ruling party.
Lagos then verbally attacked Education Minister Kostas Gavroglou saying that he wants to turn Greek children into Turks (janissaries).
When other lawmakers started protesting from the seats, Lagos started shouting: “Stop it, you traitors! Traitors, stop it!”
SYRIZA MP Nikos Xydakis gestured to the Goledn Dawn lawmaker to come down from the podium. “Get out of here!” Lagos replied shouting. Then Xydakis moved up front and came face to face with Lagos and protested.
President-in-Office Spyros Lykoudis called on the House’s guard to intervene, and things calmed when police officers showed up. “It is not possible to continue proceedings with such offensive behavior.” Lykoudis said, asking from the two MPs to calm down.
The session was interrupted for a while for tempers to calm down, while all the Golden Dawn lawmakers left the room using vulgar language.
