Turkey Claims Aegean Border with Greece Remains 'Undefined'

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu

“The sovereignty of certain islands and rocky islets and sea borders in the Aegean are not defined by any existing international agreement between Turkey and Greece,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has claimed.
The Turkish official spoke in response to a question from a Turkish opposition lawmaker.
Cavusoglu said that since the sea borders with Greece are indistinct, “a number of problems are created”.
He said there had been dialogue between the two countries and stressed that the key points for the status of the Aegean islands are laid down in the treaties of Lausanne and Paris. However, he added, the problem arises from the interpretation of these treaties.
“Our ministry, since 1996, has stated its views on the problems in the Aegean Sea and will not allow for any fait accompli in geographical borders that have not been defined, as well as any actions that will create any legal fait accompli” the Turkish foreign minister added.
The CHP lawmaker insisted that 18 Aegean islands are under Greek “occupation” and called on the Turkish government to take action on the issue.
