Shadowy Group Claims Athens Community Center Attack

A shadowy far-right group has claimed an arson attack on an Afghan community center in the heart of Athens.
The group, calling itself Krypteia, claimed responsibility for the assault in a statement to Greek media on Friday.
Thursday’s incident saw flammable liquid poured on the door of the community center and set alight. Nobody was hurt in the attack, but severe damage was caused to the building and the community center’s equipment.
In a statement, the Afghan community group said the “incendiary fascist attack” had followed shortly after a traditional new year’s celebration the International Day against Racism and Discrimination.
It also noted this was the second attack on the office had endured in recent years, with the first being in 2011 during a children’s Greek-language course.

There has been a series of violent incidents involving Greece’s ultra-right this year already.
Five people were injured, three hospitalized, when a gang of suspected neo-Nazis attacked an anti-fascist center in the Greek port of Piraeus in late February.
The attackers stormed the Favela Free Social Center in the Piraeus suburb of Keratsini, wielding iron bars and setting off flares.
Seven people are also being investigated for being members of a neo-Nazi cell calling itself Combat 18 Hellas. They are accused of a number of crimes, including running a criminal organization.
