Two would-be thieves got more than they bargained for when a Greek pensioner shot and injured one of them during an attempted robbery in the suburb of Glyfada, southern Athens, on Monday.
According to police, the 88-year-old man was attacked in the courtyard of his house by two robbers who forced him inside with the purpose of stealing money and other valuables.
However, the brave senior citizen had other ideas and managed to get hold of his gun and fire at the robbers. One was injured in the arm, but both managed to flee the scene.
A 28-year-old Albanian national and an 18-year-old Greek were later arrested at a nearby hospital where they went to receive first aid.
The homeowner was also arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.
