Some residents of Greece’s second city are struggling to get by as water supplies remain disrupted following a burst pipe.
Reports claim a 40-year-old pipe burst, meaning the city center and north-western suburbs have been without water since Tuesday.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected although water services were restored to some other parts of the city on Saturday.
However, local water company officials were quoted as saying the restored supply was not fit for consumption.
Initially, the Thessaloniki Water Supply & Sewerage Co. (EYATH) had said that the center of the city would be left without water from 10 p.m. on Thursday until 6 a.m. local time on Friday.
Shops and supermarkets saw a run on water, with bottled supplied being snapped up by city residents.
The municipality of Thessaloniki had announced that schools serviced by the main water pipeline would remain closed on Friday.
Ippokratio Hospital faced problems as well, being without water from its third floor upwards causing management to stop all microbiological tests.
However, surgeries continued normally and its artificial kidney unit continued to function as it had its own reservoirs.
