111-Year-Old Syrian Woman is the Oldest Refugee in Greece

Laila Saleh was born in 1907 in Kobani, now a mostly-Kurdish town in Syria close to the Turkish border.

War is no respecter of age and although harrowing scenes of children fleeing the conflict in Syria have swept the world, some other refugees have had to flee in the twilight of their lives.
This has been the fate of Mrs Laila Saleh, the oldest registered refugee in Greece.
According to the Greek Asylum Service, Saleh was born in 1907 in Kobani, now a mostly-Kurdish town in Syria close to the Turkish border.
It was the scene of fierce fighting between Kurdish fighters and the ISIS group, which laid siege to the town in 2014.
Saleh arrived in Greece in November 2017, having left her home after 111 years.
To make it to safety, she was carried on the back of her 66-year-old son who also fled with his family.
