Greece’ minister for Migration has expressed his “deep concern” over the increasing trend of refugee and migrant flows to the country in recent weeks.
Speaking in parliament, Dimitris Vitsas said that the increase in numbers is “enormous” at Evros on the land border with Turkey, resulting in overcrowding at migrant reception centers further inland.
“The increasing flows in the islands do not scare me because we know what to do. It is really troubling, however, to see the enormous increase in Evros,” Vitsas said.
The minister revealed that in total, 7,594 refugees and migrants entered the country in the period between January-April 2018.
In April alone, 2,168 people entered Greece from the islands and 2,700 from Evros, of which 340 just on Tuesday.
He said that as of Tuesday more than 1,000 migrants are detained in police facilities in Evros whereas at least 350 are kept at an army barracks.
The situation is equally desperate in the Aegean islands the minister said.
In April, 2,168 arrivals were recorded in all eastern Aegean islands. The bulk of arrivals was recorded in Lesvos where 1,189 have arrived, including 206 on Tuesday.
