Failed Defense Deal Cost Greece €48M, Says Court


An defense industry executive was given a 16-year suspended sentence by a Greek court on Wednesday in a case about a failed electronic warfare system which cost the state millions.
SONAK executive Thomas Liakounakos was sentenced along with 16 other defendants at a three-judge appeals court hearing in Athens.
The court also awarded the Greek state over €48 million ($57 million) in damages for the SONAK commission to provide state-of-the art high-tech electronic equipment to the army which failed to materialize.
Two former Defense Ministry officials were also among those who received suspended sentences on Wednesday.
