Explore the Greek Island of Agistri



Agistri is a lush green island located in the Argo-Saronic Gulf with a picturesque and unspoiled charm that makes for the ideal summer holiday destination.

It is perfect for a weekend getaway or one-day excursions. Only 55 minutes from the port of Piraeus by ferry, the island offers tranquility, opportunities for outdoor activities and a lively nightlife.

History

The earliest inhabitants of the island are thought to have come from the Peloponnese in the 5th century BC. Homer refers to the island as an ally of Aegina in the Trojan war. Archaeological places of interest include Aponissis, Megaritissa and Kontari. Also off the western coast archaeological remains have been found submerged.

Beaches

The island has some fabulous beaches. Pine trees come almost to the shore and waters are crystal clear. Megalohori is the perfect place to find organized sandy beaches and small taverns as well.

Megalohori (also known as Mylos): Is a fine beach with azure waters, with a mixture of pebbles and sand. Megalohori is ideal for swimming near the island’s capital town.

Dragonera: Is a marvelous pebble beach, just outside Megalohori and it is made up of two different organizes beaches, Mikri and Megali Dragonera, both with lush vegetation. Both of them are perfect for water sports.

Mareza: Is a heavenly, rocky beach with deep and clear waters, quite close to Limenaria.

Skliri and Halikiada: Near the harbor of Skala, Skliri is a small-but-stunning rocky beach. Halikiada, with white pebbles, is ideal for fishing.

Skala: This sandy beach with shallow waters is very well organized. Located just 100 meters from the port, there are some excellent fish restaurants in the area.

Activities

There are many little coves and hidden bays to discover in Agistri; they are ideal for sports such as windsurfing as well as fishing. The rocky shores along many portions of the coast allow visitors to dive and practice underwater fishing.

Agistri is surrounded by tiny islands which can be visited on day trips. Walkers and cyclists will also find different paths to explore while there is also the opportunity to ride at the horse-riding Center in Megalohori.
