Greek Champions AEK Part Company with Spanish Coach Jimenez

Manolo Jimenez

Greek league champions AEK have parted company with their Spanish coach Manolo Jimenez despite his guiding the team to its first title in 24 years.
According news reports, Jimenez had demanded a significant salary hike to sign a new contract, but the Athenian club refused to meet his demands.
Jimenez is said to be closing in a on a deal to coach Spanish side Las Palmas which was relegated from the country’s top-flight La Liga competition.
Jimenez returned to AEK on 19 January 2017 after a first foray into Greek football between 2010-2011.
He oversaw the team’s qualification to the group stage of a European competition after a six-year absence, following a 3–0 home win against Club Brugge KV in the Europa League play-off round.
At the end of the 2017–18 campaign, the club won the national championship for the first time in 24 years.
However, Jimenez failed to secure a historic double for the Athenians, as they went on to lose the Greek Cup final to Thessaloniki side PAOK 2-0 on May 12.
