The American Hellenic Institute-Athens has honored two high-profile Greeks at an awards dinner in Athens — one for fighting against smoking, and the other as a representative of the country’s armed forces.
The Hellenic Heritage Achievement and Public Service Awards Dinner was held last month in the Greek capital and saw the two honorees each receive the Hellenic Heritage Public Service Award.
Dr. Panagiotis Behrakis and the head of the Hellenic Armed Forces Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis (on behalf of the military) were both recognized.
AHI recognized Dr. Behrakis for his tireless efforts to combat tobacco usage among Greek youth, and the Hellenic Armed Forces for defending Greece’s sovereignty, promoting of peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, and working in partnership with the U.S. and NATO.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt thanked the AHI “for its long history of advocating for Greece and Greek Americans”, and said its work “strengthens the U.S. government and the profound partnership and friendship between our two countries”.
