More tension on the Aegean island of Lesvos is being reported after hundreds of asylum seekers were redistributed amid the deteriorating situation in the Moria refugee camp.
The mostly Kurdish refugees have set up temporary shelters in square and parks after rioting recently broke out in the Moria hotspot, the scene of repeated clashes between asylum seekers of different nationalities or with Greek police.
With 900 refugees now spread among three main locations outside the camps — just as the island gears up for the tourist season — Mayor Spyros Galinos has called for the decongestion of the Moria camp.
Tensions with Lesvos locals have also been on the rise, and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras received a hostile reception last month when he arrived on the island.
About 3,000 Lesvos residents gathered at the main square of Mytilene town to protest against the overcrowded refugee camps, a VAT rise, the imprisoned Greek soldiers in Turkey and other issues while Tsipras was giving a speech.
