The case of the eight Turkish ex-military personnel seeking asylum in Greece took another turn on Monday as four remaining suspects from the group were released from police custody.
The men had been in detention for 18 months, the maximum period allowed by law while they applied for asylum.
All the men will now live in secret locations, guarded by Greek police.
In late May, the Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court, granted irrevocable asylum to one of the men who sought refuge after the failed coup attempt in Turkey in 2016.
Despite objections from the Greek government that had appealed the Council of State decision, the Turkish serviceman was released from detention.
The Greek court decision angered Ankara, which has been demanding the extradition of the eight soldiers since the day they landed in Greece in a Turkish military helicopter.
Turkey insists that the eight servicemen were actively involved in the effort to overthrow the democratically elected Ankara government.
