'Macedonia is Greece': Thousands Protest in Towns Across Country (photos)

Thousands gathered in more than 20 cities in northern Greece to protest the use of the term Macedonia by FYROM as Athens and Skopje are closing in on a deal to settle the name dispute.
More than 2,000 people gathered in Pella, the historic city of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, birthplace of Alexander the Great.
Holding Greek flags the protestors heard fiery speeches from local politicians denouncing a possible deal with FYROM. A large banner proclaiming ‘Macedonia is Greece’ was placed in front of the crowd.

Rallies were also held in other northern Greek cities, such as Veroia, Kavala, Kilkis and Katerini.

Smaller gatherings were also held in central Greece, and on the islands of Crete, Rhodes, Corfu and Kos.
Rally organizers called for any agreement to be put to a referendum in Greece, and insisted that the word Macedonia should not be included in the country’s name under any permutation.
That would exclude names reportedly under discussion such as New Macedonia or Northern Macedonia.
On Monday, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said that he expects the FYROM naming issue to be resolved soon with a new moniker being chosen from ‘New Macedonia’, ‘Upper Macedonia’, or ‘North Macedonia’.
Massive protests have been held in Thessaloniki and Athens in February when the two governments announced a new push at a solution was under way.
