Greek Parliament Debates No-Confidence Motion Amid 'Macedonia' Protest

The Greek parliament is debating a motion of no confidence against the government tabled by the main opposition New Democracy party as hundreds protested outside against the provisional deal on the naming dispute with Skopje.
“I have an obligation before the Greek people to try to avert the mortgaging of our country’s future with an agreement that is detrimental to our national interests,” New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ governing left-right coalition currently holds a 154-seat majority in the 300-member parliament. To survive the no-confidence vote, the prime minister needs the full support of his governing bloc and especially of his coalition junior partner, the right-wing Independent Greeks.
The debate was disrupted by a lawmaker from the neo-fascist Golden Dawn party who called for the intervention of the military to overthrow “the government of traitors”.
Kostas Barbarousis called on the armed forces to “abide by their oath” and arrest Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
Leaders of all parties condemned the lawmakers’ outburst and voted to ban any further speeches by Golden Dawn lawmakers until the end of the debate and the roll-call vote to be held on Saturday.
Outside the parliament building, a few hundred protesters holding Greek flags demonstrated against the agreement.
