Idyllic Lake only 30 km from the Heart of Athens

The Attica Regional Council (ARC) has approved €380,000 for the rehabilitation and promotion of the route to Kithara (Guitar) Lake in the former royal estate of Tatoi.
The aim of the project is to ensure a safe route for hikers and the overall tourist development of the former summer estate of Greece’s former royal family. Simultaneously, the ARC wants to protect the environment of the area.
The works include a 2 kilometers long road that leads to Kithara Lake that will be 6 meters wide.
Kithara Lake is exactly 30 kilometers from Omonoia Square, the center of Athens. It is located on the eastern side of Mount Parnitha at an altitude of 600 meters. The scenery reminds of the Alps, as the lake is enclosed by dense pine trees, oak trees and plane trees, and is unknown to most people..
The lake is actually called Beletsi and was accidentally created in the 1970s as the bottom of a stream was closed with dikes. The water started accumulating in the area forming a lake of 5,000 square meters, with the depth reaching 5 meters at some points. It was renamed Kithara Lake because of its shape.
