Holidaymakers Desert Athens as New Heatwave Hits Greece

The first large wave of holidaymakers has left the Greek cities for their annual holidays, as meteorologists warn that a new heat wave is expected to strike the country in the coming days.
On Friday long queues were formed in the biggest Greek port of Piraeus as thousands of Athenians left the capital for the Aegean islands.
28 ships departed from Piraeus destined for the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and Crete.
Traffic was heavy in most other ports, including Lavrio and Rafina.

Meteorologists say that a new heat wave is expected to hit the country on Sunday and Monday.

Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C (104°F) in Athens, Macedonia, Central Greece, Evia, the Peloponnese, Crete and many of the islands.
