Greek War Museum in Crete Destroyed by Fire (video)

The Chania War Museum in Crete was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Monday after firefighters gave a long battle with the uncontrollable blaze.
The only thing left standing after the fire was put out is the exterior of the building, the condition of which will be assessed in the next hours. The roof and all interior spaces of the building were mostly wooden constructions and were obliterated by the flames.
The firefighters managed to limit the fire in the museum’s premises, as there was the danger of the flames spreading to adjacent buildings. Power was also cut off in the surrounding area, as a precautionary measure.

Four Chania fire department vehicles are standing by in case the fire rekindles, while police have blocked the area in front of the museum.
Entry to the museum building is prohibited due to the risk of falling parts of the roof. A foreign man who had found shelter in the museum premises was taken into custody.
Police and the fire department are investigating the cause of the fire.
