Greece' Tsipras Accepts 'Political Responsibility' for Deadly Wildfire

Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Friday that he accepts “political responsibility” for Monday’s deadly wildfire and urged his ministers to do the same.
Tsipras, speaking at a cabinet meeting in Athens, warned that heads may roll, if officials responsible for public safety are found to have acted in a negligent manner.
“The attribution of blame will occur after thoughtful evaluation,” he said and called on his ministers to accept their share of political responsibility.
Analysts say that the premier’s acknowledgement that he has political responsibility over the calamity in eastern Attica that has claimed the lives of at least 87 is purely symbolic and void of any practical consequences.
Politicians in Greece traditionally never resign, even after similar disasters.
Tsipras also said that the government will go ahead quickly with a national plan to tackle decades of building violations, adding that there were indications that the cause of the fire was arson.
