Greek Opposition Leader Slams Government Over Fire Disaster

Leader of main opposition New Democracy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, vowed that all those responsible for the deadly fire in eastern Attica earlier in the month will be held accountable.
In a press conference in Athens, Mitsotakis named the Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras and four ministers and officials as bearing most of the responsibility for the calamity.
“Responsibilities will be assigned, I trust Justice, and I will do everything to allow all questions regarding the tragedy to be answered,” he said.
He launched an attack on Tsipras who last week accepted “political responsibility” for the fires saying that “I cannot understand what political responsibility means without any resignations.”
“Accepting responsibility without resignations is a public relations exercise.”
“I really wonder how some people … can sleep today, and continue content in exercising their duties,” he added.
Mitsotakis accused Tsipras of impotence, cynicism and audacity. “He was young and irresponsible, today he is catastrophic and cynical,” he said.
