AEK, which has always been Greece’s third largest club, apart from being delegated from the top league this season, also announced that it won’t be playing in the second division as the team needs more time to repair its financial situation.

As bostonerald reports, the club hit by Greece’s financial crisis and by debts, held an emergency shareholders meeting on May 14 and appointed its new board members, who will meet on June 7 to formally launch liquidation procedures. That means that from the new season, the club will be in the 3rd division and probably under the control of Dimitris Melissanidis.

Olympiakos won the 16-team championship with 77 points from 30 matches, while AEK ended second-to-last with 30 points.

Deputy Culture Minister Yiannis Ioannidis attended the great event, while he announced that the main hall of the Alexandrio Sports Palace of Thessaloniki has been named the Nick Galis Hall, with the decision to retire Galis’ iconic number 6.

Thousands of fans mostly from Aris, along with many former team-mates, coaches and opponents attended the ceremony creating a touching atmosphere for the testimonial to Galis, which also included a friendly game between the current Aris team and Limoges from France.

55- year-old Galis stated: “When I came out and felt the love (of the fans), I could not resist. All the moments were great, hanging my jersey, the new name of the hall. It was one night that I will never forget as long as I live…The only times I have felt like this was at the birth of my daughter and today; I want to thank everyone for this.”

Galis is considered by many to be the greatest individual athlete that Greece has ever had. He has been a real inspiration for millions of Greeks to take up the sport and shoot hoops. Former Barcelona player Audie Norris was quoted, “I’ll never forget his name, as long as I live, because my son’s name is Nikos as well. It is true. He was named Nikos, because of Nick Galis. I had that much respect for the man, as a person and as a player.”

Galis remains Euroleague’s and Greek Championship’s all-time leader in career points scored and points per game. Furthermore, he holds the FIBA World Championship scoring records for the highest career points per game average.

Panathinaikos’ offenses are the use of illegal sirens, flares and firecrackers as well as the violation of the official capacity of the OAKA stadium for the two matches against the Spanish team.

Euroleague deprecated the team’s fans’ attitude, “All visiting teams must assume that, whenever they come to Athens, they are very likely to face unsportsmanlike conduct by some home spectators as well as disturbance of all sorts and nature.” At the competitions official website we also read: “Euroleague Basketball’s independent disciplinary judge made specific emphasis on the list of violations recurring at Panathinaikos home games during the last two seasons and on the potential physical danger to fans, players and game officials due to the ongoing violations.”

This is the second fine for Panathinaikos this month, as the team was recently fined 150,000 euros after the first game of the series, when the team’s president, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, accused officials of exercising influence on the final score, of 72-70, where Panathinaikos was defeated by Barcelona.

As the Guardian reports, the six-times Euroleague champion Panathinaikos was also fined 9,000 euros earlier this month for incidents caused by its fans during a regular-season home game against CSKA Moscow.

According to sources, Donis has sent an extrajudicial to PAOK’s president, Zisis Vryzas and to the major shareholder, Ivan Savvidis, a fact that undermined his reliability and the relationship of trust between Donis and the club.

As a result, the club announced Donis’ sacking, “due to an important reason for which he is to blame,” because they think that the extrajudicial defamed PAOK FC, the team’s owner and president.

The technical leadership of PAOK for the six games of the Super league playoffs will be undertaken by Giorgos Georgiadis, the former Greece under-21 manager. PAOK states in the announcement: “We apologize to those who traveled to Tripoli and to those who dreamed about PAOK’s participation in the Cup’s finals.”

Donis joined the club at the start of the season after leaving Atromitos, finishing second in the 16-team league behind champion Olympiakos.

Donis and PAOK reportedly might end up in court to resolve the issue of the severance pay the manager is entitled to according to his contract, as reported in the newspaper Kathimerini.

AEK Athens’ soccer team, relegated to the second division for the first time in 89 years after its most disastrous season ever, had its appeal against punishment measures rejected on April 25 by the Greek Football Federation (EPO) which upheld the Greek Super League sanction.

AEK, which dropped from the top flight last week, was penalized three points from this season and fined 4,000 euros ($5,200) after a April 14 match at home to Panthrakikos was abandoned when home fans chased both sets of players off the pitch.

Panthrakikos were awarded a 3-0 win for the match, which was stopped after AEK had conceded an 87th-minute goal to go 1-0 behind against their fellow strugglers. AEK, which will start next season in the second division with a further two points deducted, had been fighting to at least get the chance to play the final three minutes of the abandoned match.

“The EPO court of appeal has accepted the punishment administered by the Super League and rejects outright AEK’s appeal,” the federation said in a statement. AEK is the second team to receive such a penalty, following Panathinaikos, which received the same five-point deduction after last season’s game with Olympiakos Piraeus at the Olympic Stadium was abandoned.
