US increases cost of visas

The application fee for a US nonimmigrant visa will increase worldwide as of June 4, the US Embassy in Athens said in a statement yesterday. The cost of the visa will depend on the purpose of travel, the embassy said.
Tiered Consular Services Fee
Effective June 4, 2010 the application fee for a U.S. non-immigrant visa will increase worldwide, and the exact cost will depend on the purpose of travel. The fee for business and tourism (B1/B2), student (F1/M1), exchange visitor (J), journalist (I) and seaman/crewmember (C1/D) visas will increase to $140 (115 euro at the current exchange rate). The fee for petition-based visas for employment in the U.S., including for temporary workers (H), intracompany transferees (L), aliens with extraordinary ability (O), athletes, artists and entertainers (P), international cultural exchange visitors (Q) and religious workers (R) will increase to $150 (123 euros at the current exchange rate). Fiancé (K) visas will increase to $350 (287 euros at the current exchange rate) and treaty trader and investors (E) visas will increase to $390 (320 euros at the current exchange rate).
The U.S. Department of State is increasing fees to meet the rising costs of processing non-immigrant visas. The Bureau of Consular Affairs completed a cost of service study, which found that the cost of accepting, adjudicating and issuing certain categories of visas was higher than others. The Department believes it would be more equitable to all of our applicants to charge fees that more accurately reflect the cost of processing these visas.
Applicants must pay their application fee before their visa interview at any branch of Piraeus Bank, located throughout Greece. Applicants must present their valid passports to the bank at the time of payment, which must be made in euros.
Applicants who paid the previous $131 application fee and are interviewed for a visa before June 4, 2010 will be processed without further payment. Applicants who paid the previous application fee and appear for visa interviews on or after June 4, 2010 will be asked to pay the difference at the Consular Section’s cashier before they will be interviewed.
More information on visa categories and how to schedule an appointment can be found at the embassy’s website (http://athens.usembassy.gov/visas.html).
