Greek nightclub death trial adjourned

A student due to stand trial for causing the death of a British teenager in a Greek nightclub has been granted bail, a human rights charity said today.
Andrew Symeou’s (photo) trial for the manslaughter of 18-year-old roller hockey player Jonathan Hiles was due to begin in Patras, Greece, today.
Symeou is accused of punching Hiles, of Llandaff North, Cardiff, hard in the face, causing him to lose consciousness and fall off a dance podium at the Rescue nightclub in Zante (Zakynthos) while on holiday in July 2007.
Mr Hiles suffered a severe brain injury and died two days later from his injuries.
Symeou denies manslaughter and all knowledge of the incident.
The case was adjourned at the request of the Greek public prosecutor because key witnesses had not been summoned and Symeou, from Enfield, north London, was released on bail after spending 10 months in a Greek prison, a spokeswoman for Fair Trials International said.
Symeou was extradited to Greece under a European Arrest Warrant in July 2009.
Jago Russell, chief executive of Fair Trials International, said: “This young man and his family have been through a horrendous ordeal over the last 12 months.
“After a long legal battle, we are delighted that he has finally been released on bail.
“We hope that the Greek authorities now do everything within their power to ensure his trial goes ahead as soon as possible.”
A spokeswoman for the charity said a new date for the trial would be set by the Court of Appeal in Patras.
