New pillars for the upgrade of the Greek Language in Greece and abroad

With a National Council for the Greek Language and a General Secretariat under its authority, at the Ministry of Education which will be taking over the overall coordination for all issues regarding the support and upgrade of the Greek language in Greece and abroad, the foundations will be set for the new institutional structure which will serve Greek education the following fall. This was announced by the minister of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs, Anna Diamantopoulou within the framework of the briefing she gave on Thursday to members of the Special Permanent Committee for the Greek Diaspora in the Parliament.
The first step, as she explained, will be an international conference which will take place on the 28th of June in Thessaloniki, with the participation of scientists and politicians which will set the base for a final proposal that is going to take an institutional form.
The objective is to set an institutional framework which will put an end to the dispersal of responsibilities, lack of coordination and bad use of the fewer, at present, resources.
Especially for outside Greece, the new approach will focus on the three pillars of Language – History – Culture, and detached educators who will be invited to serve will only be nursery teachers, teachers and philologists, whilst cultural skills will include gymnasts, musicians and in some countries, mathematicians.
The certificate for the Greek language, as explained by the minister, is a priority abroad, as there is great interest shown in waiting lists, in many countries. This certificate must be a valid one, stressed Ms. Diamantopoulou, noting that a transformation of Greek Language Centers is bound to take place, such as Goethe and the French Institute.
Four hundred points worldwide, such as Centers of Greek Studies Chairs will be included under specific planning to the National Council of Greek Language, will be renewed and supported with detachment of educators and financial resources with transparent activities and with specific criteria.
At the same time an organization of systematic teaching of the Greek Language is bound to take place in all countries which have shown interest through our embassies with educators on the spot.
With regards to the issue of detachments and in response to the views of members of the Committee related to the waste of funds without end results which revolved around this matter, Ms. Diamantopoulou said that the rationalization of the situation is not only employed for the reduction of expenses but mainly to serve the Greeks of the Diaspora in manageable manner by the Greek state, with the key objective being to leave no children who wish to learn the Greek language and cannot.
As the Minister mentioned, the number of detached educators during 2008-2009 increased by 20% whilst students were reduced. On this issue, Ms. Diamantopoulou stated that responsibility will be sought.
The following October as Ms. Diamantopoulou stated there will be a bill for the Greeks of the Diaspora, with students as its first priority in accordance with the financial potential of the Greek state.
During the meeting, the President of SAE Region of Europe of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Giorgos Amarantidis was also present, who stressed, among other things on the importance of efficiency in Educational systems, based on long term planning, as well as the need for quality in Education and training of detached teachers.
