PM: Measures to boost entrepreneurship

Prime minister George Papandreou pledged on Friday that his government will take additional measures to boost the entrepreneurship and competitiveness of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), including a reduction in taxation, when more stable results are achieved in the country’s fiscal finances, speaking in parliament during the Hour of the Prime Minister and in reply to a current question tabled by Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) leader George Karatzaferis.
Papandreou stressed that the country was facing an unprecedented and urgent situation, the confrontation of which requires the contribution of all the social forces. “Unfortunately, we are paying the price of the criminal mistakes and omissions of the previous governments. But we are waging the battle for the restructuring and development of the country’s economy,” he added.ana-mpa
The premier noted that the first duty had been to ensure the continued existence of the Greek economy and to avert the threat of default. “It was decided that deep changes are necessary to escape the vicious circle of deficits and tax evasion, and to respect each and every euro of the citizens,” he said.
He also stressed that the first results are “encouraging”, adding that “we are on the right path, and the sacrifices are not in vain”.
The changes include an overall simplification of business licensing procedures, clamping down on corruption, and serious bankruptcy legislation, he said, and called on all the political parties and social partners to contribute to the effort and to submit their own proposals for simplification of the procedures and aiming at freeing the forces of the economy.
